NABC’s lineup for Fest of Ale 2013

Before turning to the estimable Steve Coomes and his coverage of this year’s Fest of Ales, here is a look at NABC’s lineup on Saturday. There may be a surprise growler tasting.

Ancient Rage (formerly Yakima)
Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrel-Aged India Pale Ale
ABV: 7.5% … IBU: 130
Color: Golden/orange.
Flavor: Medium bodied, with aggressive hops at all stages.
Compare to: Stone IPA, Southern Tier IPA or Sierra Nevada Torpedo IF they were to be aged in a bourbon barrel.

Naughty Girl
India Blonde Ale
ABV: 6% … IBU: 69
Color: Golden-to-amber.
Flavor: Medium-bodied. Restrained Belgian fruitiness. Assertive hopping, but falling short of Hoptimus levels.
Compare to: A hoppy Belgian blonde ale, and unique.

Eastern Front (formerly Elsa)
Russian Imperial Pilsner
ABV: 9% … IBU: 80
Color: Golden.
Flavor: Full-bodied, but deceptively drinkable, with all the attributes of a crisp, clean, hoppy Pilsner – just more of everything.
Compare to: Rogue Morimoto, Sam Adams Hallertauer, Clipper City Uber Pils.

ConeSmoker
Smoked American Pale Ale
ABV: 7% … IBU: 65
Color: Amber.
Flavor: Medium-bodied, with mixed character: Part hoppy Pale Ale, part smoky brown ale.
Compare to: Any other smoked beer (Schlenkerla, Spezial, Rogue Smoke) but with a hoppy backbone.

Eighth-annual Fest of Ale to feature 50 breweries, nearly 200 beers

Local beer lovers, clear your calendars for the 8th Annual Keg Liquors Fest of Ale on June 1.
I’ve never met a beer fest I didn’t like, but I’m partial to this one: its wide open grassy layout on the table-flat grounds of St. Anthony Catholic Church, 320 N. Sherwood Ave., in Clarksville; the quality and variety of beers poured; the amazingly varied attendee demographics (20s to 70s); and the great, easy going vibe, something founder Todd Antz said was established from day one.
