Yeeup, I'm still workin' on this one.
A family business - then and now.
Sportstime Pizza then. The NABC Pizzeria now.
The O'Connell family, Sharon, Rich, and their daughters Amy and Kate, acquired our current Pizzeria off Grant Line Road in 1987. Although it was then a Noble Roman's franchise, a once popular and successful local chain, it soon became clear that the family could do it better themselves and Sportstime Pizza was launched a short time later.
It was a family business, and there was work for everyone - lots of work. Longtime patrons still remember Sharon keeping the pizzeria open late to offer third-shift workers at nearby factories 'lunch' and an all too brief respite in more comfortable and hospitable surroundings, opening on holidays for newly arrived transfer workers from the surrounding apartment complexes and others disinclined to 'cook for one' or to be home alone on Thanksgiving, being there for friends and patrons, for cohort after cohort of new, young employees, and nurturing the business her family was building together, so that it might provide them not just a livelihood, but a future.
Amy and Kate started learning the business young, working after school, and mastering the operation of a small business - top to bottom - in the loving, supportive environment of a family business. Grant Line patrons are still enjoying Amy's cooking, while its Kate who keeps day to day operations running like a top. Both are their mother's daughters; making patrons feel like friends, friends feel like family and a place of business a home away from home just seems to come naturally to the O'Connell women.
Rich O's then. The NABC Public House now.
In 1990 Amy took over responsibility for the newly opened Rich O's BBQ, next door to Sportstime. Together with her then boyfriend, budding beer aficionado Roger Baylor, the two began the work of building a one-room barbecue restaurant in a suburban New Albany strip center into one of the Louisville area's best venues for discovering the delights of fine, artisanal brewing. Roger joined the business officially in 1992 and soon became part of the family.
The New Albanian Brewing Company
In 1994 the business was incorporated as the New Albanian Brewing Company, with primary responsibility for its operation passing to the next generation, Amy, Kate and Roger.
The family had long been active in homebrewing circles and had been among the founders of Fossils, or 'Fermenters of Special Southern Indiana Libations', the local home-brew club that still calls the NABC home. (When the family brought home the prize from yet another brewing competition, however, it was usually for one of Amy's creations.) 2002 brought the next logical step, the addition of a small, on-site craft brewery. Michael Borchers, former owner of the Silver Creek Brewing Co., sold the NABC his equipment and then stayed on - along with his considerable experience and expertise - to become the NABC's first brewer.
Craft beers from the New Albanian Brewing Company quickly earned a reputation for quality and creativity, not just with patrons of the NABC, but among attendees at brewing events across the country. Within a year NABC brews had been declared “Best of Louisville” and “Best of Show” in the Indiana State Fair commercial brewing competition. Our original NABC Brewery was once rated sixth in the world according to Ratebeer.com.
When Michael Borchers left to return to grad school in 2005, Jesse Williams stepped forward as the NABC's lead brewer. While Jesse had learned the craft of brewing with Michael, his approach was influenced by his love of fine cooking and experience in some of the areas best kitchens. Jesse has contributed new favorites like Croupier and Hoptimus to the NABC line, while continuing Michael's best loved brews.
Jared Williamson soon joined Jesse in the Grant Line brewery. With Jesse's move to the NABC's new Bank Street Brewhouse, Jared is now our man at Grant Line, providing us with fine NABC beers while Jesse and our new Director of Brewing Operations, David Pierce, perfect the Bank Street installation. Soon Jared will guide our original Garage Brewhouse into its new role producing our lines of specialty and seasonal beers.
“We’ve been around a long time.
People know we’re good at what we do.”
Roger Baylor, co-owner
The Prost! Rooms
Sportstime had long been a sought after venue for parties, so in 2006 the NABC opened the Prost! Rooms, a popular banquet and events wing.
Prost! comprises a banquet room that can seat 40 to 50 guests for special events and large gatherings and two more intimate rooms that can accommodate private parties of 20 or more. The entire space can seat 75 comfortably.
Our Prost! Rooms have been reserved for occasions as disparate as baby showers and election night vigils and have often been the venue for events hosted by the NABC, including tastings, concerts, special subscription dinners and exhibitions by local artists.
Of late we've often faced the not unpleasant challenge of finding seating in the Pizzeria and Public House inadequate for the number of our guests and so the Prost! Rooms are now opened on Friday and Saturday evenings, when not reserved.
And now for something completely different ...
... yet familiar in all the ways that matter most.
The Bank Street Brewhouse
Our new Bank Street Brewhouse, at 415 Bank Street, will function as NABC’s larger-capacity production brewery, where primary brands like Elector, Hoptimus, Beak’s Best, Kaiser and Thunderfoot will be brewed, conditioned, kegged and canned for regional distribution. In addition, the Bank Street location is home to our brasserie, a small taproom/restaurant for enjoying NABC’s beers as well as a limited Belgian-style café menu, and a small on-premise shop for wearables, glassware and souvenirs. It will also be possible for consumers to buy kegs and carry-out growlers. |
