March 2, 2014: Sun King Sunday Sunrise & Gravity Head Brunch at Bank Street Brewhouse.

And now for something not entirely but somewhat different on Gravity Head’s opening weekend.

As many readers already know, NABC’s Pizzeria & Public House always closes on Sunday. In the past, we have counseled Gravity Head attendees to use this time wisely:

The journey has only just begun, and you might choose to listen to your body; drink liquids, have a nap, and avoid both strenuous lifting and the operation of heavy machinery. Or, perhaps you’d rather live like a rock star, and if so, NABC’s Bank Street Brewhouse is open from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. for the usual Brewhouse Brunch (until 2:00 p.m.), our locally famous Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar, and the only Sunday carry-out beer within staggering distance of the Indiana riverbank.

In 2014, we’re raising the recuperative bar with a previously unannounced encore.

Last year during Gravity Head 2013, when Sun King Brewing Company was the opening weekend headliner, Eric and Ben transfilled and squirreled away sixth-barrels of all six of the opening Sun King beers, and put them to leisurely rest in Cellar 3. As befits their solid gravity pedigrees, a year’s aging has rendered them even more delicious than before.

On Sunday, March 2, at 10:00 a.m., we’ll be tapping all of them in Bank Street Brewhouse’s WCTU Reading Room. At around 1:00 p.m., there’ll be music by the legendary Ragged Arse Tinkers of Madison, Indiana. These will be 10-ounce pours, March 2 only at BSB; remember, we can only sell our own NABC beers for carry-out.

Sun King Sunday Sunrise is a one-off event, and a very rare opportunity to sample great examples of vintage Indiana brewing from one of our finest breweries. If this year’s inaugural edition goes well, we’ll plan variants for future Gravity Heads.

Here’s the Sun King list for March 2, 2014 at BSB:

Sun King Batch 666: Sympathy for the Devil (2013)
(16E) Belgian Black Ale
Bitterness: 34 IBUs
Alcohol by volume: 11%

Sun King Batch 777: Touched By An Angel (2013)
(18C) Belgian Tripel
Bitterness: 24 IBUs
Alcohol by volume: 10%

Sun King Big Iron (2012)
(19B) English Barleywine
Alcohol by volume: 10%
Clay Robinson (owner): “A handful of beers, we come up with a really good name and then design a beer backwards to fit the name. We just brewed a barleywine that’s called Big Iron that’s going to be a really fun beer that we’re going to cellar for a while before we let out. We’ll brew that this summer (2012) and probably release it later in the winter.”

Sun King Dominator (2013)
(5C) Doppelbock
Bitterness: 23 IBUs
Alcohol by volume: 8%
Brewery says: “Exudes the aromas of brown sugar and molasses to go with hints of gingerbread and sun-dried raisins. A full flavored beer that finishes crisp and dry.”

Sun King Timmie (2013)
(22C) Oak Aged Russian Imperial Stout
Bitterness: 70 IBUs
Alcohol by volume: 10%
Brewery says: “A flavor packed RIS with hints of gingerbread, dark brown sugar and vanilla. Enjoy with caution!”

Alcohol by volume: 8%
Brewery says: “A large, malt-balanced ale with huge toffee flavors and hints of port-like character.” Wee Muckle won a Gold Medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival in the Scotch Ale division.

About Sun King Brewing Company (Indianapolis IN)

For Gravity Head 2014, our friends from Sun King in Indianapolis are in a category by themselves, as they’ve been so often since the brewery opened in 2009. Sun King has been a Hoosier brewing pioneer in numerous ways, from achieving critical mass through self-distribution to large-scale canning, and from tap room layout to community partnerships. From start-up to institution in five short years, Sun King is helping cement Indiana’s expanding craft brewing reputation. Cheers to Clay, Dave and all the people at Sun King, and welcome to Gravity Head 2014, and our first-ever Gravity Head event at Bank Street Brewhouse.
